Trump Relents on Crypto Ethics Provision Amid Accusations of Brazen Corruption
President Donald Trump has agreed to a significant portion of a bipartisan ethics proposal within sweeping cryptocurrency regulation legislation. Three Republican senators confirmed that he signed off on the substantial part of the rigorous ethics provision embedded in comprehensive cryptocurrency legislation set for a crucial vote this week.
The original bill contained only a clause preventing all federally elected officials and their spouses, along with federal judges, from issuing digital assets. However, a central faction of Democrats argued that this fell short of adequately addressing potential conflicts of interest related to Trump's cryptocurrency holdings. They insisted on provisions empowering state attorneys general to enforce the law alongside the Justice Department.
According to White House crypto adviser Patrick Witt, it incorporates a 'meaningful role' for state attorneys general in implementing the crypto measure once enacted. Trump consented to provisions enabling state attorneys general to take legal action against cryptocurrency exchanges that list digital assets prohibited under the broader bill.
