Trump Secures Permanent Security Control Over Greenland

US President Donald Trump has signed an agreement with Denmark and Greenland that grants permanent control over security operations on Greenland, a move seen as expanding US military presence in the Arctic region. The 'Infinite Life' Agreement updates a 1951 treaty between the US and Denmark, which was last amended in 2004.

The new deal bans non-NATO adversaries from establishing military bases or deploying personnel in Greenland, while introducing investment screening measures targeting adversarial nations in sensitive sectors. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described it as a 'historic deal' that comes at zero cost to US taxpayers.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that the agreement strengthens Arctic security within the NATO framework, while Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen confirmed that the accord respects Danish sovereignty and preserves Greenland's right to self-determination. The investment screening provisions are aimed at China's playbook of acquiring stakes in critical mineral operations.
