Trump Sets Post-Quantum Deadline for Federal Systems
US President Donald Trump has set a deadline of 2031 for federal systems to adopt post-quantum cryptography, aiming to shield them from potential quantum attacks. The move comes as the encryption landscape becomes increasingly urgent due to the threat posed by quantum computing.
The two executive orders signed by Trump target quantum security and innovation, with one measure directing agencies to migrate high-value systems onto post-quantum standards set by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. These systems must adopt the new cryptography for key establishment by the end of 2030 and for digital signatures by the end of 2031.
The Office of Management and Budget and the national cyber director will oversee the migration across government, with a pilot program due to be completed by December 31, 2027. Cyber officials are also tasked with helping critical infrastructure operators make the same shift.
