Trump Sets Quantum Deadline as Encryption Race Turns Urgent

President Donald Trump has signed two executive orders to accelerate the US shift to quantum-resistant encryption. The orders set a deadline of 2031 for federal systems to adopt post-quantum cryptography, with high-value systems required to make the switch by the end of 2030.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology will provide guidance on the new standards, which will be implemented across government agencies. A pilot migration is set to complete by December 31, 2027, with a full transition expected by the end of 2031.

The orders also direct federal procurement rules to be rewritten to speed adoption of post-quantum standards across government contractors. National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross warned that quantum computing poses a significant threat to public key cryptography, which secures everything from banks and infrastructure networks to government systems.

Analysts estimate that around 7 million Bitcoin could face eventual quantum risk due to the lack of post-quantum security in their encryption. Industry preparations for this transition have been underway for months, with Google setting a 2029 target for post-quantum standards and Stellar mapping its own migration path.
