President Donald Trump has set a deadline for the US to shift to quantum-resistant encryption by 2031. Two executive orders signed on Monday target quantum security and innovation, with federal high-value systems required to adopt post-quantum cryptography by the end of 2031.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology will provide the new standards, which must be adopted for key establishment by the end of 2030 and for digital signatures by the end of 2031. The Office of Management and Budget and the national cyber director will oversee the transition across government agencies.

Analysts estimate that roughly 7 million Bitcoin could face eventual quantum risk due to public key cryptography, which secures everything from banks and infrastructure to government networks.
