Trump Signs Voluntary AI Safety Accord with Tech Giants
US President Donald Trump has signed a voluntary AI safety accord with six major tech companies. The Joint Commitment on Frontier Responsibilities, also known as the White House Accord on Super Intelligence, is not binding and relies on self-policing by the industry.
The agreement sets out a four-tiered framework for overseeing how frontier AI models are developed and deployed. It requires internal monitoring, empowered oversight teams, independent auditors with whistleblower-style protections, and board-level committees to ensure safety protocols are followed.
The six signatories are Anthropic, Google, Meta, Nvidia, OpenAI, and xAI, a subsidiary of SpaceX. The accord is not new, as it builds on voluntary AI safety pledges established under President Joe Biden in 2023. However, the current version introduces formal structures like board-level committees and auditors with whistleblower-style protections.
The industry has welcomed the deal, but critics argue that its strength depends entirely on whether companies follow through when safety conflicts with speed or revenue.
