Trump Touts Crypto Regulation Bill Amid Family Profits and Scrutiny
President Donald Trump has been pushing for the passage of the Clarity Act, a bill aimed at bringing regulatory structure to the digital asset industry. The legislation would establish a formal framework dividing oversight between the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). This comes as Trump's family crypto ventures have reportedly generated over $1 billion in earnings.
The Clarity Act includes provisions targeting money laundering through crypto platforms, restrictions on Federal Reserve Banks from offering certain digital financial products directly to individuals, and ethics rules barring senior federal officials from creating or sponsoring digital assets while in office. The latter has attracted significant scrutiny given the president's own involvement in launching meme coins around inauguration time.
A bipartisan effort is underway to address concerns about the enforcement of these ethics rules. Two lawmakers have drafted an alternative proposal that would bring state attorneys general into the enforcement process, distributing accountability more broadly. However, it remains unclear whether the White House will move towards this proposal or hold firm on the current version of the bill.
