Trump Urges Congress to Pass Cryptocurrency Clarity Act
President Donald Trump urged Congress to pass the Clarity Act, which would establish clear statutory rules for the cryptocurrency industry. At an event at the White House, where he was joined by regulators and leaders from Coinbase, Kraken, and Robinhood, he praised the progress made by the crypto industry in the US.
Trump stated that passing the Clarity Act will 'keep the U.S. ahead of China' and 'open the door to the next wave of innovations and innovators.' The legislation aims to end the Securities and Exchange Commission's regulation through enforcement, establishing which digital assets are securities and not commodities.
The bill includes consumer protections, such as $150 million for anti-fraud measures and resale restrictions on insiders to prevent 'pump-and-dump' schemes. However, it has drawn opposition from congressional Democrats due to concerns about presidential conflicts of interest.
Senator Elizabeth Warren stated that the underlying bill fails to adequately protect investors, the financial system, and national security. Trump's earnings from his crypto ventures have also raised alarms among critics, including former special counsel Ty Cobb.
