Trump Vows $5,000 Checks for Americans if Republicans Win Midterms
President Donald Trump has promised American adults $5,000 each if Republicans maintain control of the House and Senate after the November midterms. Trump made this announcement at a GOP gathering in Dallas while Republicans try to hold onto their congressional majorities.
The cost of sending out these checks could exceed $1 trillion, which is more than the government currently spends annually. The US government already has a debt of around $40 trillion and is spending about $1.8 trillion more than it collects each year.
Trump's proposal, dubbed the 'Trump Dividend,' would see Americans receive direct payments like shareholders in cash companies. However, Vice President JD Vance attempted to scale down this plan by suggesting that only some of America's wealthiest individuals might be excluded from receiving these checks.
Vance also mentioned using tariff revenue to fund the payments, but it's unclear if this is enough to cover the costs. The proposal has raised concerns about federal finances and debt levels, with the US national income already being matched by government debt for the first time since World War II.
