Trump's Crypto Agenda Hinges on CLARITY Act Passage Amid Ethics Concerns

The CLARITY Act, a landmark bill aimed at clarifying market structure for digital assets, is facing an unexpected hurdle in the Senate. Democrats are pushing for stronger ethics language to limit senior officials' profits from crypto ventures, citing concerns that President Donald Trump's personal business interests could undermine the bill.

The issue stems from warnings made before the 2024 election by crypto figures, who argued that tying the industry too closely to a political figure would make market structure legislation a partisan fight. Republicans added ethics restrictions to the July 22 CLARITY draft, but Senate Democrats say the language remains too narrow and weakly enforced.

President Trump's promises to reshape crypto regulation at Bitcoin 2024 in Nashville included removing SEC Chair Gary Gensler, installing crypto-friendly regulators, opposing a central bank digital currency, supporting domestic Bitcoin mining, and building a government-held Bitcoin stockpile. His administration has since taken steps to implement these changes, but the CLARITY Act's passage is now testing whether his personal business interests can be separated from policy decisions.

The bill's fate hangs in the balance as Senate Democrats demand stronger ethics language, including restrictions on how senior officials can issue or sponsor digital assets. If negotiators fail to reach a compromise, the bill may not pass, and crypto's legislative future could remain uncertain.
