Trump's Crypto Bill Optimism Meets Congressional Reality Check
President Trump's optimism about the CLARITY Act has been met with skepticism by lawmakers and industry experts. The bill, which aims to provide clarity on cryptocurrency regulations, has been stalled in Congress due to disagreements over ethics language.
A meeting between the President and crypto executives at the White House did little to move the needle forward. While Trump called for a fair version of the CLARITY Act to be passed, lawmakers are still far from reaching the 60 votes needed to pass it.
Meanwhile, regulatory agencies are taking matters into their own hands. The SEC has proposed Regulation Crypto Assets, which includes two registration exemptions and a safe harbor from investment contract status. However, this move has actually made it harder for industry supporters to push through the bill, as it provides some of the benefits they're seeking without the need for legislation.
The CFTC is also getting involved, with Chairman Michael Selig warning that if the bill stalls, the agency will use its existing authorities to start building a crypto asset market regime. This would mean creating a designation for crypto exchanges similar to designated contract markets, but it's unclear how this would work without legislative support.
