Trump's Crypto Empire Derails Regulation Bill
The crypto industry has been eagerly awaiting regulation to integrate digital assets into traditional finance, and President Trump's sudden shift on cryptocurrency last year brought new hope. However, a key bill aimed at clearing the regulatory path hit a snag when Republican senators failed to pass it due to the president's own crypto business interests.
Trump's sons launched several crypto businesses before he took office in 2024, and these companies have raked in over $1 billion. Democrats, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren, opposed the bill because it didn't sufficiently prevent public officials from trading crypto.
'This crypto bill says, 'Have at it, Mr. President.' … That's just fundamentally wrong,' Warren said. The bill's failure marks another disappointment for the crypto industry under Trump's administration, which has seen a string of regulatory moves in its favor, including installing industry-friendly officials and proposing a strategic bitcoin reserve.
Despite this setback, some market participants remain optimistic, suggesting that regulatory clarity is still on the horizon. 'The world's largest banks and asset managers are already building digital asset infrastructure,' said David Mercer, CEO of trading platform LMAX Group.
