Trump's Crypto Holdings Block Senate's CLARITY Act Amid Partisan Rift
The Senate's CLARITY Act, aimed at establishing federal cryptocurrency market structure regulations, has hit a roadblock after a procedural vote on September 15 fell short of the necessary threshold.
The bill was blocked by a 49-50 tally, with every Democrat who participated voting against it. Republicans Susan Collins, Josh Hawley, Jerry Moran, and Thom Tillis also voted against it.
However, Senator Thom Tillis preserved the bill's future by submitting a motion to reconsider following the unsuccessful vote.
According to Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis, the defeat was largely due to Democratic opposition fueled by animosity toward President Donald Trump, who has personal cryptocurrency investments. However, Democratic lawmakers countered that sticking points involved ethics safeguards related to cryptocurrency holdings by elected officials.
The House of Representatives previously approved its iteration of the CLARITY Act with significant bipartisan backing, garnering 294 affirmative votes, including support from 78 Democratic members.
