Trump's Crypto Holdings Deter Senate Passage of Clarity Act
The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets, has stalled in the Senate. The bill would have given the CFTC primary oversight of digital assets, but it failed to pass with a vote of 49-50 on September 15. Every Democrat voted against the legislation, and four Republican senators joined them.
The main reason for the Democrats' opposition was the lack of ethics provisions in the bill. President Trump's disclosure of $1.4 billion in cryptocurrency earnings from ventures in 2025, including revenue from the $TRUMP memecoin, gave Democratic senators a reason to demand guardrails on officials profiting from regulated assets.
Crypto industry leaders are now pointing fingers at the White House, arguing that Trump's involvement in crypto ventures poisoned the bill's chances. They believe that if Trump had not been so deeply entangled in cryptocurrency, Democrats might have been willing to negotiate on a bill they had previously shown interest in.
