Trump's Crypto Holdings Under Fire as He Drafts Regulations
President Donald Trump is involved in drafting cryptocurrency regulations while maintaining significant financial ties to the industry. According to recent disclosures, he and his family have profited nearly $1.5 billion from cryptocurrency last year, including a substantial sum from his Trump Meme Coin, which has seen an 80% drop in value.
The president has repeatedly denied personal involvement in his family's businesses, but the connection raises concerns about potential conflicts of interest. Former White House ethics lawyer Richard Painter noted that while Trump's actions are technically not illegal, they pose a serious financial conflict of interest for the president to supervise regulators while holding substantial investments in the industry.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that nearly two-thirds of Americans believe it is inappropriate for the president and his family to profit from cryptocurrency during his tenure. Even among Republicans, three out of ten hold this view.
