Trump's Crypto Profits Sink Industry's Dream Bill
The cryptocurrency industry had high hopes for the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, which aimed to give the crypto market a favorable regulatory and legal footing. However, those plans were dashed when President Donald Trump's personal profiteering in digital assets came under scrutiny.
The bill would have addressed issues with corporate transparency laws, but the proposed legislation also included a provision on presidential ethics that left enforcement up to the U.S. attorney general. This meant the Trump administration could police itself.
Many Democrats opposed the bill due to Trump's billion-dollar crypto profits last year and his refusal to address ethics provisions that would have limited his profiteering. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a key antagonist of the bill, pointed out that Trump had even added a bank charter for an entity connected to World Liberty Financial, the Trump family's crypto enterprise.
Crypto sympathizer Sen. Mark Warner agreed with Warren, stating that Congress could not pass landmark legislation governing the industry while allowing the president to personally profit from it.
