Trump's Crypto Windfall: A $2.2 Billion 'Disaster Waiting to Happen'?

Share

John Oliver recently criticized President Donald Trump's involvement in cryptocurrency on his HBO show Last Week Tonight. According to financial filings, Trump's personal income surged above $2.2 billion, with most of it coming from family crypto businesses that brought in about $1.4 billion.

The Official Trump meme coin and World Liberty Financial are two major crypto ventures mentioned by Oliver. He described meme coins as speculative assets often resembling 'pump-and-dump schemes.' The Trump token fell 92% from its peak by December, while Melania Trump's token dropped 99%. Despite the decline, Trump reportedly earned $636 million from the project.

Oliver also highlighted transactions that raised ethical concerns, including a $2 billion commitment from an Emirati investment fund that generated at least $187 million for Trump's company. He commented, 'It sure seems like Trump is exploiting crypto sketchiness for maximum profit.'
