Trump's Cryptocurrency Profits Spark Concern Among Majority of Americans
A new poll conducted by Reuters/Ipsos has found that most Americans believe President Donald Trump and his family have inappropriately profited from cryptocurrency since his return to power. The four-day poll, completed on Monday, surveyed 1,166 U.S. adults nationwide between August 14 and August 17.
According to the results, half of Trump's own Republicans believe that he allows considerations for his business interests to influence his decisions, a striking finding for a leader who pledged to clean up corruption in Washington. The majority of respondents, 63%, said it was inappropriate for Trump and his family to have profited in this way.
The poll also found that Americans are divided on whether corruption is worse under the Trump administration than under other recent presidents. While Democrats largely think there is more graft, Republicans are split roughly down the middle. The White House dismissed any allegations of impropriety, saying Trump's investments were managed by independent financial institutions.
Experts on presidential ethics have called the current confluence of business and politics in the White House unprecedented. 'We have seen nothing like this before, even the first Trump administration did not have as many complex business interests as the second Trump administration,' said Richard Painter, the top ethics lawyer for Republican President George W. Bush.
