Trump's Second Term Marred by Corruption Concerns
Americans' concern about corruption in government has reached its highest level in two decades, according to a Gallup survey. The 89% figure represents a sharp increase from last year and signals a significant shift in public sentiment during Trump's second term.
The Democrats account for much of this shift, with their perception of widespread corruption rising to 91% this year, up from 76% in Trump's first year. In 2024, while Joe Biden was president, only 57% of Democrats held this view.
Trump's personal finances are under scrutiny, with him earning over $2.2 billion in the first year of his second term, compared to about $600 million in 2024. Much of this income comes from non-traditional ventures, including his cryptocurrency business, which has faced increased scrutiny after an investment firm linked to the United Arab Emirates acquired nearly half of his main crypto company.
The deal has raised allegations of possible foreign influence on U.S. policy. Trump has also faced criticism for a plan that allows early access to his Truth Social posts, which can impact financial markets. Lawmakers in Congress have repeatedly raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest.
