President Donald Trump has announced a rebranding of artificial intelligence (AI) to 'super intelligence' in official government documents. This change comes as part of a broader effort to establish a voluntary review framework for advanced AI systems.
The administration's approach, outlined in Executive Order 14409, aims to strike a balance between reckless permissiveness and heavy-handed regulation. Companies can submit their most advanced systems for cybersecurity reviews lasting up to 30 days before public release, but participation is entirely voluntary.
Trump has framed this as the sweet spot between allowing companies to innovate freely and preventing misuse through gatekeeping. The existing legal apparatus, particularly the Department of Justice, will serve as a backstop for catching misuse after it occurs.
