U.S.-China Relations Show Signs of Improvement
A new survey by Pew Research Center has found that Americans are warming up to China. The share of Americans who view China unfavorably has decreased from 68% in 2021 to 54%. At the same time, the percentage of people with a positive view of China has increased from 11% to 19%, while those holding a neutral view have grown from 20% to 27%
The survey was conducted among 1,168 U.S. adults between September 14 and 20. Another study by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs found that American sentiment towards China has improved since its record low in 2024
Ja-Ian Chong, an associate professor of political science at the National University of Singapore, attributes this shift to a recognition that better understanding is beneficial. He suggests that this may be part of a rebound from pandemic-era lows in U.S. views of China
However, there remains a deep reservoir of apprehension among Americans towards China, particularly within Trump's MAGA Republican base. The Chicago Council survey found that 63% of MAGA Republicans favor containing China rather than cooperating with it
