U.S. Senate Shelves CLARITY Act for Russia Sanctions Bill Amid Legislative Gridlock
The U.S. Senate has put the CLARITY Act on hold to prioritize a Russia sanctions bill, leaving the crypto legislation's fate uncertain.
The delay means that a vote on the CLARITY Act is now unlikely before next week, when the Senate enters its August 8 recess. This leaves only a narrow window of time for the bill to be passed before the break.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune initially planned to bring the CLARITY Act to a vote before the recess, but his staff revealed that the Russia sanctions legislation is now the priority. The Russia bill was renamed in tribute to the late Senator Lindsey O. Graham who championed it before his death.
Crypto YouTuber Crypto Rover expressed frustration on Twitter, calling for an end to the delays and labeling the pattern of legislative maneuvering as 'legislative theater'. Others pointed out that the delay does not change the market's underlying need for regulatory clarity and that the long-term conversation remains active.
