U.S. Senate's Clarity Act Hits Roadblock Over Trump Crypto Holdings
The U.S. Senate's push for a federal regulatory framework on cryptocurrencies has hit a roadblock due to ethics concerns over Donald Trump's crypto holdings.
Senate Democrats voted against the Clarity Act, which aimed to create a comprehensive federal framework for the industry, citing that it did not adequately address presidential conflict-of-interest loopholes.
The bill's lead architect, Sen. Cynthia Lummis, had described the moment as 'now or never' ahead of the cloture vote, but the measure failed to secure the required 60 votes, leaving its future uncertain.
Sen. Mark Warner said he couldn't support the legislation because it would allow the president to profit personally from the crypto industry, while Sen. Cynthia Lummis maintained that the revised text included state-level enforcement and divestment requirements.
