UBS Grapples with Tightened Capital Rules as Ethereum Falls
The Swiss parliament's decision to tighten capital rules has put UBS Group in a precarious position. Analysts at RBC Capital Markets estimate that the bank will see a 9% hit to earnings per share as a result of the vote, which requires 90% CET1 backing.
While this is only slightly better than the worst-case scenario of full CET1 backing, it still poses significant challenges for the bank. RBC's analysts believe that UBS may look into finalizing mitigation plans, but do not expect any disclosure to the market before the rules are finalized.
In other news, Ethereum has fallen 1.4% to $2,648 due to elevated Treasury yields and concerns over tighter monetary policy. According to Zaye Capital Markets analyst Naeem Aslam, restrictive macroeconomic conditions are offsetting inflows into Ethereum exchange-traded funds and renewed accumulation by large holders of the cryptocurrency.
HSBC digital asset analysts also weighed in on tokenization, noting that it offers operational efficiencies but faces challenges related to technology underpinning it. They believe that tokenization must coexist with legacy financial infrastructure for now.
