UBS Pumps Up Its Bitcoin Bet with Massive Call Option Surge
UBS, one of the world's largest banks, has significantly increased its exposure to Bitcoin through call options tied to BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT). The Swiss banking giant reported a massive 24-fold surge in call option exposure in the second quarter, giving it the right to acquire IBIT shares at a later date at a set price. This increase is substantial, especially considering UBS' outright IBIT holdings rose about 12% during the same period.
The bank's overall position in IBIT represents a significant investment in Bitcoin, with call options covering 1.95 million underlying shares as of June 30, up from 80,000 three months earlier. This increase is notable, but it's essential to consider that UBS' direct IBIT position remains below the 548,614 shares reported at the end of last year.
The bank's put option exposure, which gives it the right but not the obligation to sell IBIT at a set date and price, moved in the opposite direction. UBS reported puts representing 143,300 underlying shares, down about 53% from 303,300 at the end of March. The disclosure does not include strike prices or expirations, making it challenging to determine UBS's net directional exposure.
