UK Banks Make History with Interbank Blockchain Transactions
UK Finance has announced that British banking giants Lloyds, NatWest, and Barclays have successfully executed two home loan transactions using tokenized deposits. This marks a historic milestone in the adoption of blockchain-based technology in the financial sector.
The two mortgage transactions were part of a larger trial initiative called the Great British Tokenised Deposit programme. In addition to these interbank movements, HSBC and other participating institutions conducted a peer-to-peer payment simulation, mimicking an e-commerce transaction.
Tokenized deposits are digital tokens that represent traditional bank deposits on blockchain infrastructure. They have identical legal standing as conventional bank deposits, distinguishing them from privately-issued stablecoins. According to UK Finance, these tokenized deposits offer potential to reduce transaction expenses and accelerate processing times relative to current payment infrastructure.
