UK Banks Pioneering Blockchain Tech with Tokenized Deposits

Share

The UK's banking sector has made significant progress in embracing blockchain technology as Lloyds, NatWest, and Barclays successfully completed the first-ever interbank transactions using tokenized deposits. The breakthrough was announced by UK Finance on September 24, 2026, marking a major milestone for the country's financial industry.

The test involved two live remortgage payments and a simulated online purchase, with funds transferred between banks in a digital format on a blockchain. This method can help reduce conveyancing fraud, which occurs when criminals redirect funds meant for home purchases.

A separate test led by HSBC involved a customer-to-customer payment resembling an online marketplace transaction, where the buyer's funds were held until delivery of goods was verified. The participating banks plan to establish a new company and create a rulebook to transform this pilot into a commercially viable service.
