UK Crypto Firms Must Apply for Authorisation Before 2027 Regulation
The UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is opening a window for crypto firms to apply for authorisation, ahead of a new regulatory regime set to take effect in late 2027. This marks the first time these companies will be fully regulated by the FCA, with clear standards covering consumer protection, safeguarding, market integrity, and financial resilience.
The regulator states that this is a significant milestone for both the industry and investors, as it provides clarity and legitimacy to the sector through a proper regulatory framework. The move also signals the UK's commitment to giving crypto investors the protections they have never had before.
Firms intending to continue operating in the UK must apply by February 28, 2027, with the new regime set to come into force on October 25, 2027. The FCA notes that authorisation is not automatic and that firms will need to demonstrate they meet its requirements. Those unable to show the necessary standards will not be authorised to operate in the UK market.
