UK Crypto Gateway Opens Amid MiCA Cutoff Fallout
The UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has opened its gates to cryptocurrency firms seeking authorization, allowing them to operate in the country until February 28, 2027. This move is a result of the FCA's new regulatory regime, which was implemented after Europe's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR) cutoff left many unlicensed businesses behind.
Only 213 licensed entities cleared the bar when the MiCAR transition period expired on July 1, with only 16 of the world's 100 largest exchanges by volume holding a license. The FCA has given firms a five-month window to apply for authorization, after which they will face restrictions on signing new customers or selling new business.
The UK regulator is committed to providing clarity and legitimacy to the sector, as well as consumer protections that did not exist before now. However, Director of Authorization Dominic Cashman warned that not every applicant will be approved, citing a historical precedent of using the regulatory framework to 'thin out' the field.
