UK Crypto Investors Reveal £717 Million in Gains Amid HMRC Compliance Push

Share

HMRC released its first official statistics on taxable cryptoasset gains in the UK. According to the data, 240 individuals reported more than £1 million each in cryptoasset capital gains during the 2024-25 tax year, declaring a total of £717 million in gains.

The figures show that these high-value gains account for only a small fraction of the 17,600 individuals who made Capital Gains Tax-liable cryptoasset disposals in the same period. The average reported gain per individual was £78,000, with total taxable capital gains reaching £1.38 billion.

HMRC's release also highlighted the importance of compliance and education efforts in generating additional revenue from cryptoactivity. The tax authority estimates that its cryptoasset compliance activity generated an additional £168 million of Capital Gains Tax in 2024-25.
