UK Crypto Millionaires Dominate Gains with £717M
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has released its first comprehensive analysis of cryptocurrency capital gains submitted by UK taxpayers for the 2024-25 fiscal year. The report reveals that 17,600 individuals reported a combined £1.38 billion in taxable crypto asset gains during this period.
The aggregate value of these disposals totaled £13.8 billion, with recognized gains amounting to £1.38 billion. A select group of 240 taxpayers each disclosed cryptocurrency gains surpassing the £1 million threshold, collectively reporting £717 million in gains and representing approximately 52% of the total.
The demographic analysis showed a significant gender disparity among cryptocurrency tax filers, with approximately 87% identifying as male and female filers comprising just 13%. The report also highlighted that cryptocurrency service providers commenced their Cryptoasset Reporting Framework (CARF) documentation obligations on January 1, 2026, and will be filing their initial submissions documenting 2026 transactions between January and May 2027.
HMRC dispatched over 81,000 compliance letters to individuals believed to have underpaid cryptocurrency taxes. The authority reported that its comprehensive crypto enforcement initiatives yielded £168 million in supplementary Capital Gains Tax collections throughout 2024-25.
