UK Crypto Tax Crackdown Accelerates Ahead of 2027 CARF Enforcement

HMRC sent over 81,000 warning letters to crypto investors in the UK, up from just 27,714 two years ago. This marks a significant increase in scrutiny of digital asset holdings.

The sharp rise is largely due to the increasing use of cryptocurrency and the growing awareness among tax authorities that many holders are not reporting their gains or income correctly. The HMRC has been actively pushing for greater transparency and compliance with crypto tax rules, which can be complex and easily misunderstood.

One of the main issues is that many investors believe their offshore accounts fall outside UK tax rules, but this is not the case. UK residents are generally taxed on worldwide gains, meaning profits made through foreign platforms can still be reportable at home.

The OECD's Cryptoasset Reporting Framework (CARF) will come into effect in 2027, requiring participating countries to share crypto account information. The UK, along with dozens of other jurisdictions, has committed to implementing this framework, which is expected to make it easier for tax authorities to track down unreported income and gains.

The HMRC has already started collecting standardized crypto transaction data from UK reporting cryptoasset service providers, which will be used to inform their enforcement efforts. This marks a significant shift in the way the UK government approaches cryptocurrency taxation, with a focus on greater transparency and compliance.
