UK FCA Begins Crypto Authorization Process Ahead of New Regulatory Regime
The UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has opened its formal authorization application window for cryptoasset firms, marking a significant shift in regulatory oversight. As of September 30, businesses can begin submitting applications to continue operating under the new regime, which takes effect on October 25, 2027.
The comprehensive review process assesses firms' consumer protection measures, safeguarding of client assets, market integrity, and financial soundness. Firms that fail to meet the standards will be unable to provide regulated services once the new regime is in place.
Existing firms must complete their application procedures by February 28, 2027, to benefit from continuity measures. Those that submit applications within the deadline can continue operating until a final decision is reached, even if their review extends beyond the implementation date.
The new regime covers stablecoin issuance, cryptoasset trading platforms, dealing and intermediation, custody, and staking arrangements. The FCA will assess each firm's client asset management controls, safeguards against market manipulation, and capital resilience based on the nature of their business.
