UK FCA Unveils Guidance on Cryptocurrency Asset Regulation Ahead of 2027 Regime
The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has released new guidance on cryptocurrency asset regulation to help businesses prepare for the upcoming regime. The guidance covers various activities, including issuing eligible stablecoins and operating trading platforms. David Geale, Executive Director at the FCA, stated that this guidance aims to provide clarity so businesses can confidently prepare for regulation.
The authorization application window will open on September 30, 2026, ahead of the regime's implementation on October 25, 2027. The government has also made targeted amendments to relevant legislation, introducing certain exemptions and further clarifying specific technology service providers. A dedicated consultation is set to launch in October, covering topics such as eligible stablecoins, proprietary trading, and decentralized protocols.
The FCA emphasizes that investments in digital assets can be risky, and businesses should carefully evaluate the risks before proceeding. The new guidance is intended to provide a clear understanding of the requirements for authorization under the UK's cryptocurrency asset regime.
