UK Sanctions Tskhinvali Leaders and Pro-Russian Figures
The UK has imposed sanctions on several individuals and entities linked to Georgia, including former and current leaders of the Russia-occupied Tskhinvali region. The move is part of a broader effort to target those involved in activities threatening Ukraine's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence.
The sanctioned individuals include Alan Gagloev, the former de facto leader of Tskhinvali; Marat Kambolov, who was recently elected as the region's new de facto leader; Mamuka Pipia, international secretary of the pro-Kremlin Solidarity for Peace party; Giorgi Iremadze, a pro-Russian commentator and member of the party's political council; Nikoloz Mzhavanadze, founder of the Russian-language TV channel Sezoni; and Paata Abuladze, a pro-Kremlin figure reportedly related to Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze.
The UK has also sanctioned three Georgia-registered companies operating Russia-focused exchanges that seek to evade sanctions. This is part of the country's broader crackdown on crypto and illicit finance networks exploited by Russia to circumvent UK sanctions.
