UK Watchdog Demands Google Offer Search Alternatives Amid AI Rise
The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is pushing Google to provide users with more search options on its Android operating system and Chrome browser.
The proposal, part of the CMA's comprehensive digital markets framework, aims to give users greater control over their search service preferences.
Google was classified as holding strategic market status in the UK for general search and search advertising sectors in October 2025.
The authority is scrutinizing Google's 'choice architecture,' or how search alternatives are presented to users, and has proposed that Android and Chrome users require enhanced capabilities to designate their preferred search provider.
