Undercover Crypto Detective Exposes $1 Billion Laundering Syndicate
Zachary Wolk, known in crypto circles as ZachXBT, recently detailed his undercover mission to expose a Chinese crime syndicate laundering over $1 billion in stolen cryptocurrency. As an Incident Response Advisor at Paradigm, Wolk posed as a client to infiltrate the network, which is linked to the North Korean-backed Lazarus Group. To gain trust, he risked $349,700 of his own funds across 15 suspicious accounts, conducting test transactions and tracing illicit flows on major blockchains.
One key figure in the syndicate, using the alias Jimmy Green, assured Wolk that the laundered funds were untraceable. Wolk discovered that the group handled most of the $1.5 billion stolen in the February 2025 Bybit exploit and $387 million from the September 2026 Bitget hack. Jimmy also shared details about moving funds ahead of time, operations in Hong Kong and mainland China, and provided Solana (SOL) addresses tied to a cluster that moved $12 million of stolen Bybit funds across Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Tron (TRX).
Wolk's tracking led Tether to freeze $442,000 of the stolen funds. Since 2022, his efforts have helped freeze over $75 million linked to North Korean hacks. Despite his success, Wolk is seeking financial support to continue his investigative work against on-chain crime.
