Uniswap Works on Compliance-Ready DeFi Pools for Japan
Uniswap is working on a compliance-ready decentralized finance (DeFi) pool framework for Japan in collaboration with SMBC Nikko Securities, Nethermind, and other partners. The framework will use Uniswap v4 hooks, which are external smart contracts that can be attached to individual pools. These hooks can restrict who adds or removes liquidity, enforce anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorism-financing controls, and implement investor-protection rules.
The project aims to create a Japan-focused DeFi gateway, with a target completion date of mid-2027. However, key details about governance, deployment, and enforcement remain unclear. The partners plan to explore AI-driven vaults, stablecoins, and strategies for liquidity in real-world assets, but the scope and connection to the proposed pools are not defined.
The Uniswap v4 hook mechanism allows for gatekeeping, where approved users can manage liquidity while others are restricted. However, the hook's permissions are encoded in its contract address, and changing them requires creating a new pool. The largest unresolved issue is governance, as no source explains who can write the hook code or update its controls after launch.
The project has previously worked together on secure DeFi access, with a research focus on compliant gateways using agentic AI. However, the current announcement leaves the enforceable rules for these pools unspecified, raising questions about access and liquidity.
