Upbit's Dominance of South Korea's Crypto Market Raises Regulatory Concerns
South Korea's cryptocurrency market is experiencing a significant concentration of corporate and foreign investor activity on Upbit, its largest exchange. According to data from the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), Upbit holds the majority of corporate and foreign accounts and custodial assets among the nation's top five exchanges.
The FSS data reveals that 6,590 corporate accounts are registered across the five major South Korean exchanges, holding a total of approximately 43.38 billion won ($32.5 million) in crypto assets. Of this amount, 27.08 billion won ($20.3 million), or 62.4%, is held on Upbit alone.
The high concentration of corporate and foreign trading on one exchange may raise questions about market stability and the need for diversified infrastructure. Regulators are increasing oversight to ensure compliance with anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) requirements.
