Uphold Introduces Secure Digital Asset Inheritance Feature
Uphold has launched Vault Inheritance, a new feature that allows customers to designate beneficiaries for their digital assets in its assisted self-custody wallet. The service currently supports Bitcoin (BTC), XRP, and HBAR.
Vault was introduced by Uphold in late 2023 as a 2-of-3 multisignature wallet inside the company's app. Two keys belong to the user, while one key belongs to Uphold. This setup ensures that two signatures are required to move funds, preventing the firm from unilaterally spending customer assets.
The inheritance feature works by allowing users to invite a beneficiary from their Vault dashboard. The beneficiary must be at least 18 and have an Uphold account. They will receive no view of balances, history, or addresses while the owner is alive and can only access the funds after submitting official records such as a certified death certificate or probate order.
Nancy Beaton, Uphold's president of consumer, noted that digital assets have become an important part of people's wealth-building strategies, but there are few tools available to pass them on securely. She stated that 'digital assets have become part of how many people build wealth, yet few simple tools exist to pass them on securely, especially for XRP holders.'
The company estimates that millions of BTC sit in wallets that are effectively unreachable because owners died or lost keys. This is a significant problem, as it highlights the need for secure and user-friendly inheritance solutions.
