US Bank Enters Stablecoin Market with USBDC Launch
US Bank has launched its proprietary dollar-backed stablecoin (USBDC), following a successful pilot transaction using the Stellar payments network. The USBDC was created in partnership with Stellar, which US Bank announced last November. The pilot evaluated minting, payment redemption, freezing, and clawback capabilities, as well as giving a boost to US Bank's in-house Digital Asset Platform.
The potential applications of USBDC include enhanced liquidity management, collateral mobility, cross-border treasury operations, and other institutional use cases where blockchain technology can improve efficiency, transparency, and settlement speed. US Bank is one of the few U.S. banks to adopt a go-it-alone stablecoin strategy, mirroring JPMorgan's (JPM) launch last year of its JPM Coin.
In related news, Circle has acquired Tazapay, a Singapore-based B2B cross-border payments infrastructure company, for $400 million. The acquisition will see Circle acquire all outstanding shares beyond the 5.23% stake it already holds in Tazapay. The deal is expected to close next year.
