US Banks Shift Crypto Exposure Toward Ethereum, Altcoins as Bitcoin Dominance Wanes
US banks in the Americas have made a significant shift in their cryptocurrency exposure, moving away from Bitcoin and toward Ethereum and other altcoins. According to data from the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS), Bitcoin's share of crypto asset risk fell sharply to 44.2% from 75.8% in the previous reporting period.
Ethereum saw its share increase to 38.5%, narrowing the gap with Bitcoin's weighting and signaling a growing interest among banks in the region. Solana accounted for 7.8% of exposure, while XRP represented 5.6%. The reallocation occurred despite the total volume of crypto asset risk on bank balance sheets remaining relatively unchanged.
The shift toward more diversified portfolios suggests that institutional participants are becoming more discerning in their digital-asset allocation strategies. Ethereum's rise to near-parity with Bitcoin's weighting may reflect views on relative value, utility, and long-term adoption prospects across different blockchain networks.
