US Bitcoin Reserve Holds Over $25 Billion Worth of Cryptocurrency
The U.S. government's Strategic Bitcoin Reserve was established in March 2025 through Executive Order 14233, but its current holdings of 328,372 BTC are not a straightforward figure.
These coins were primarily obtained through federal forfeiture proceedings, including the Bitfinex investigation (94,000 BTC), James Zhong case (50,676 BTC), and Silk Road's 'Individual X' case (69,370 BTC).
The 2025 Prince Group case added another significant amount to the reserve, with approximately 127,271 BTC seized by the Department of Justice.
However, not all government-held Bitcoin is automatically eligible for reserve treatment. Some assets may be subject to forfeiture proceedings or other restrictions before becoming part of the reserve.
