US Blocks Chinese Data Center Equipment Amid National Security Fears
The Trump administration has taken steps to block Chinese-made data center equipment from entering the US. This decision comes as the country is grappling with national security concerns and a growing demand for compute power in AI and crypto applications.
The Federal Communications Commission announced import restrictions on July 28 targeting connected power inverters, humanoid robots, and quadruped robots manufactured in China. Power inverters are crucial hardware that connects energy sources to data center grids.
The restrictions apply only to newly manufactured models, not equipment that's already been authorized for import. This means existing infrastructure remains unaffected by the ban.
The FCC's rationale centers on concerns about remote foreign access, potential cyberattacks, and data theft. The worry is that Chinese-manufactured equipment embedded in critical US infrastructure could be remotely deactivated or used as a surveillance backdoor by foreign government entities.
