US Congress Advances Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Bill
The House Financial Services Committee has voted to advance the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve bill, marking the first time such legislation has cleared a full committee. The bill aims to formalize the federal government's practice of holding onto seized Bitcoin instead of selling it off.
The legislation builds on an executive order signed by President Trump in March 2025 that created the reserve. Key provisions include centralizing custody of forfeited Bitcoin, a minimum 20-year holding period before major sales are possible, and annual public reporting and audit requirements.
The government currently holds an estimated 324,000 to 328,000 BTC, worth close to $24 to $25 billion at recent prices. The bill still faces a long road ahead, including a full House vote, Senate approval, and a presidential signature.
