US Crypto Leadership at Risk as CLARITY Act Stalls in Senate
Florida Rep. Mike Haridopolos is renewing his push for the CLARITY Act, a bill aimed at establishing clear regulations for digital asset activity in the United States. The legislation has stalled in the Senate due to procedural delays, with lawmakers set to depart for their summer break after August 7.
Haridopolos, a Republican member of the House Financial Services Committee, argued that the CLARITY Act is essential for maintaining US leadership in digital asset markets. 'This is about making sure that American markets are the premier markets in the world,' he stated during an appearance on Fox Business' Mornings with Maria.
The bill would establish separate responsibilities for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), providing exchanges, token issuers, and blockchain developers with a clearer route to operate in the US. The Senate Banking Committee advanced the legislation by a 15-9 vote in May, but negotiations on restrictions covering elected officials' digital asset interests are ongoing.
New York Attorney General Letitia James has expressed concerns that the bill could override state digital asset rules and weaken local efforts to pursue crypto scams. She called for stronger anti-money laundering, customer identification, and cybersecurity requirements.
