US Crypto Regulation Bill Stalls Over Trump Business Concerns
A proposed law aimed at regulating cryptocurrencies in the US has stalled in the Senate due to concerns over President Donald Trump's business dealings and potential conflicts of interest.
The Clarity Act, which sought to create a federal framework for the digital asset market, failed to garner enough votes to advance, with 49 senators voting against it and only 50 in favor. The bill needed at least 60 votes to proceed.
Democrats opposed the bill, citing concerns that the safeguards incorporated into the legislation were not sufficient to prevent federal officials from benefiting economically from cryptocurrency-related businesses while in power.
The controversy grew due to Trump's financial activities, which reported over $1.4 billion in income related to cryptocurrencies and digital tokens in his 2025 financial statements.
Elizabeth Warren, the top Democrat on the Senate Banking Committee, has maintained that the US needs legislation for the sector but demands stricter provisions on public officials' investments, consumer protection, national security, and combating illicit finance.
