US Crypto Regulation Push Sparks Indian Action
The US Senate's push for clearer crypto rules has put pressure on India to fill its regulatory gap for virtual digital assets (VDAs). The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, which aims to establish a clear framework for digital commodities and define the jurisdictions of the SEC and CFTC, is advancing in the US senate. This move comes as Indian policymakers are considering their own approach to regulating VDAs.
Industry experts believe that the US legislation could serve as an important benchmark for global policymakers, offering learnings on balancing consumer protection, AML compliance, and tax clarity without stifling innovation. In India, a parliamentary panel has recommended a statutory framework for VDAs and cryptocurrencies, suggesting an interim mechanism through self-regulatory organisations (SROs).
While the US legislation does not directly determine policy in other markets, its eventual shape could become an important reference point for regulators globally. Indian policymakers are already considering how to balance investor protection, market oversight, and innovation as they develop their own regulatory approach.
