US Crypto Regulation Vote Crashes Bitcoin Price Amid Regulatory Limbo
A US vote on crypto regulation under the Clarity Act has caused turmoil in the market. The bill, which aimed to bring the fragmented US crypto market under one regulatory hood, was voted down by senators in a 49-50 closure vote. Democrats opposed the bill due to concerns that its hastily drawn-up ethics measures would have led to further personal enrichment of the Trump administration.
The banking industry also voiced opposition to the bill, warning lawmakers that its provisions would cause customers to move their money from traditional bank accounts to digital ones. The price of Bitcoin hit an intraday low of $74,967.97 on September 15 after the vote, with shares in Coinbase and Circle experiencing double-digit percentage drops.
The failure to regulate crypto will leave the US in a state of limbo, falling behind well-regulated markets in Europe and Asia Pacific. The absence of regulatory clarification will ensure persistent enforcement disparities for crypto firms across different states and federal regulatory bodies.
