US Crypto Regulators Face Leadership Vacuum Amid Congressional Gridlock
The US crypto market is set to lose a key regulator as SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce prepares to leave her post on October 2. This departure will reduce the commission's balance and leave it with only two Republican commissioners, Chair Paul Atkins and Commissioner Mark Uyeda.
This change comes as Congress has failed to pass the proposed CLARITY Act, which aimed to clarify responsibilities between agencies. The SEC is currently advancing crypto policy through rulemaking and regulatory interpretation, rather than new legislation.
The CFTC is also operating with a single chair, Michael Selig, who took over after acting chair Caroline Pham's departure in December 2025. Despite the lack of additional commissioners, the CFTC has continued its work on crypto-related issues, including blockchain recordkeeping requirements.
